Housing & Roommate Resources

Sharing your home with roommates is one of the best ways to cut living costs. While many people use platforms like Facebook or Kijiji, we know finding welcoming housing can be a challenge.

That’s why we’ve created the Shared Living Board: a simple, low-barrier space for 2SLGBTQ+ folks in Ottawa to connect with potential roommates. It’s a free, moderated community board hosted by Kind Space.

How it works:
You can browse listings or post your own. If you see a match, you reach out directly. It’s that simple.

Please note:
Kind Space does screen listings but does not facilitate matches. We provide this space as a community resource, but we do not vet individuals or assume responsibility for arrangements made through the board. Users are encouraged to trust their judgement and take necessary precautions.

Frequently Asked Questions

    • This board is for 2SLGBTQ+ community members interested in living or remaining in Ottawa/National Capital Region.

    • This is for people who are interested and want to share a living space with one or more people. Ideally, you find living with others not only financially beneficial, but also beneficial for your mental well-being.

    • It’s recommended for those 18+.

    • It is strongly encouraged to meet with any prospective roommates BEFORE visiting an apartment/house.

    • Kind Space will do our best to provide you with tools to make the safest and most informed decision you can make.

  • Yes, this is a free service to use. The platform, Padlet, is free to use for anyone.

  • Over the years we’ve been asked if people can 1) post an ad for roommates on our physical bulletin board, and 2) if we know anywhere they can find 2SLGBTQ+-friendly housing.

Those were tricky questions to answer. It was a yes/sorta situation. Yes you can post your ad but no guarantee anyone will see it as the resource board is already full. Yes, there is a Facebook group for queers looking for shared housing but it requires a Facebook account and it is a closed group so it can be difficult to find.

For 2 years we’ve been thinking about how we could host a virtual bulletin board and finally found a low barrier, low maintenance platform suitable for what we envisioned.

‍This is not a solution to the housing or affordability crisis. This is a very small scale opportunity for us to provide community members with safer alternatives to find others interested in shared living. ‍

  • The short answer is no, we don’t provide housing support services.

The longer answer is that as an organization we create opportunities for people to meet and create connections across shared identities, values, and activities. Resources and requests for support around housing are very common despite our organization not specializing in housing or shelter services.

  • There is currently no explicit vetting process for individuals that use this service. There is a standard that posts must meet in order to appear on the board.

Before you can view or post on the board, you must sign in with an email. Post are manually reviewed by a staff member before they are posted and if they do not meet the standard their post is rejected.

This is a Kind Space service and like all programs, events, and services are subject to the Accountability and Community Policy and the Anti-Harassment Policy.

  • No, Kind Space does not currently have the capacity to provide financial support for first/last month’s rent, rent arrears, moving expenses, etc.

  • No, this service does not receive dedicated funding. This service is managed by existing staff.

Those that wish to support this service, and all services provided by Kind Space can donate here.

  • This is a new initiative which will need lots of promotion to be as successful as possible.

Posts are taken down after a month or whenever a roommate match is found to make sure the listings are the most current.

With time and patience, we hope this board grows to be a valuable resource for community members.
